Galway: A festival of fun throughout the year

Whether you like sport, festivals or simply seeing the sights, Galway is a destination everyone should visit at least once in their life.

The city has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2020, and with its mix of historic and modern attractions it’s easy to see why.

Here’s our guide to some of the best things to do in Galway.

Sport

It’s difficult to think of Ireland without sport coming to mind. Whether it’s horse racing, the Gaelic Games or football that takes your fancy, there’s plenty on offer across the sporting spectrum.

July’s Galway Races meeting is the showpiece event of the summer programme, offering people lots of opportunities to use any Reel King Online winnings to further boost their bankroll.

The Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle are the top two races, and the meeting always draws massive crowds over the course of seven spectacular days.

Soccer fans are also well-catered for, as Galway United playin the Airtricity Irish Premier League from February to October.

The Galway Races meeting isn’t the only festival held in the city, with fans of food and drink, comedy, live music and the arts positively spoilt for choice.

The annual Galway Food Festival takes place during April,while Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival held in September attracts visitors from across the globe.

The Galway Christmas Market has grown rapidly over the past few years and rivals many similar markets in other top European cities.

The Galway International Arts Festival, Galway Comedy Festival,Galway Film Fleadhand the Babora Children’s Festivaladd to the festival culture in the city, providing entertainment for people of all ages.

A sight for sore eyes

If sight-seeing takes your fancy, Galway will not let you down. The Cliffs of Moher is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions, standing over 700 feet tall at their peak high above the Atlantic Ocean.

Eyre Square features a memorial to famous USA President and Irish descendant J. F. Kennedy, while a modern shopping centre nearby features lots of street entertainment over the summer months.

Culture vultures are spoilt for choice too, with Galway City Museum,St Nicholas’ Church and Galway Cathedral all worth visiting.

Galway lends itself perfectly to either short breaks or a full-blown holiday and definitely should be on your places to visit in the future.
